Please reference the TABLE 20.1 (page 6 of 40) and think about which type of arts-based research you are interested to discover and learn more about.

What is the difference between enquiry and inquiry?

Can one simultaneously enact multiple art-based research methods?

Arts-Informed Research

Arts-Informed Inquiry

Research-Based Art

Research-Based Practice

Arts-Based Health Research

Arts-Based Research Practices

There are four aspects of strength that Leavy mentions from p. 8-10. Have you ever felt one of them when you conducted arts research/project in the past? What did you feel at that time?

All four! A holistic and transdisciplinary approach to art making has always been my perspective. I attempt to include all dimensions of a concept into the artwork itself. Evoking and exploring meta-cognitive experiences is also an approach to art making that has always been with me. In many of my human experiences I can't fully grasp and process what happened and how I feel about it/ how I am thinking about it without art. Making my experience 3 dimensions, it is much easier to see my meta-cognitions. Ethics and social justice have been of primary concern to me since my first year in undergrad. My first semester in my Leadership Studies minor class made me question most of what I had been programmed to believe growing up. I was unaware of so many social injustices until that class. The first two years of my undergraduate art works were arts based research in some of these social injustices (like homelessness). And innovative dissemination practices have just begun to take root in my art practice. I have finally figured out how to include emotions and language through aesthetic in a successful manner. I was elated when this happened; the identity artist never felt real until that moment.

There are different approaches under various genres that Leavy categorizes for arts-based research. Which approach interests you the most and you may want to explore and experiment it for your final project.

Arts-Based Health Research interests me the most and I could implement in my final project; along with auto ethnography.

Questions:

In arts-based research, like poetry, how reliant is the poetry on preliminary research? Or does the poetry influence the research?

How vast is the ABR umbrella of other subjects? Is there art based research on things from politics to biology?

At what point is fictional ABR not considered "fact"? I understand the idea that fictional stories are arguably non-fiction because they are/ could be someone's human experience/ their story. Is there fictional ABR that is not even slightly considered someone's reality?
